Notes on the Use of Generative AI
Notes on the Use of Generative AI in Scientific Writing for the Journal of Engineering and Technological Sciences (JETS), 22 August 2026
The policy on using AI tools must be followed by all, regardless of manuscript type, including research and review papers. The purpose is to ensure that AI is used within responsibilities and ethical boundaries.
- For authors
Generative AI tools can be utilised to write manuscripts more effectively, including rapid identification of insights, summarisation of relevant literature, identification of research gaps, enhancement of results, and linguistic refinement.
Not allowed: AI must not be used to fabricate research findings, invent or manipulate experimental or computational data, generate figures that do not accurately represent the reported results, or create or alter primary research images. This includes, but is not limited to, microscopy images, material characterization images, spectra, chromatograms, electrophoresis images, thermal images, and other instrument-generated data intended to represent actual experimental observations.
Authors must remain under human oversight and should not replace critical thinking processes. Consequently, authors are required to include an AI usage declaration when submitting their manuscript. This declaration will also be publicly available. The declaration must specify the name of the AI tool, its specific purpose, and how it is used. If AI is solely used for grammar checking, spelling, and improving readability, authors are not required to submit this declaration.
Here is an example of the declaration:
During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [The name of AI] to [the purposes of using AI in manuscript preparation]. Any content generated or assisted by the AI was subsequently reviewed by the authors to ensure complete responsibility for the content.
- For reviewers
Reviewers must not use AI tools during the review process, including submitting manuscripts to AI, to uphold integrity and accountability, which depend on experts' judgment. Additionally, submitted manuscripts may contain personal information protected by privacy rights.
- For editors
Editors are responsible for evaluation and decision-making, so they must not use AI tools for decisions. Manuscripts involve confidentiality and proprietary rights, which may cause data privacy issues.
