Publication Ethics

JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Publication Ethics and Policies

JETS is committed to maintaining integrity, transparency, accountability, and trust throughout the scholarly publishing process—from submission and peer review to publication and post-publication.

Journal of Engineering and Technological Sciences (JETS) is published by Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) through the Directorate for Research and Innovation.

Trust between authors, reviewers, editors, and readers gives the research record its value. JETS works to protect that trust at every stage of the publication process and long after publication.

Our editorial practice follows internationally recognized standards for ethical scholarly publishing. Where a situation is not specifically covered by this page, the editors refer to relevant COPE guidance and flowcharts.

Editorial Responsibilities

What We Expect from Everyone Involved

Authors

Submit work that is their own, original, accurately reported, and not under consideration by another publication.

Authors acknowledge the work of others, disclose funding and competing interests, and cooperate with editors if questions arise after submission or publication.

Reviewers

Assess manuscripts objectively and on time, treat them as confidential documents, and do not use unpublished findings for personal benefit.

Reviewers should decline invitations when they have a conflict of interest or lack the necessary expertise.

Editors

Make decisions based on scientific merit, relevance to the journal's scope, and clarity, without regard to nationality, affiliation, gender, religion, or seniority.

Editors keep submissions confidential and step aside when they have a personal or professional interest in a manuscript.

Publisher

Institut Teknologi Bandung guarantees the editorial independence of the journal, keeps the platform secure and publicly accessible, and supports the editors in handling ethical cases.

02
Authorship

Authorship and Contributions

Everyone listed as an author should have made a substantial contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study; participated in drafting or critically revising the manuscript; approved the final version; and agreed to be accountable for the work.

People who contributed in other ways, such as technical support, data collection without further involvement, or language editing, should be named in the Acknowledgements.

Authorship changes

All authors must sign the JETS Authorship Statement at submission. Requests to add, remove, or reorder authors after submission must be sent by the corresponding author, provide a reason, and carry the written agreement of every author.

Disputes over authorship are handled following COPE guidance. The journal does not rule on who deserves credit but may pause processing until the authors or their institutions resolve the matter.

03
Integrity

Conflicts of Interest

A conflict of interest exists whenever a financial, professional, or personal relationship could influence, or appear to influence, how work is conducted, reported, or evaluated.

Authors declare conflicts in the Declaration of Competing Interest form submitted with the manuscript. If there are none, the form must explicitly state so.

Reviewers and editors must declare any conflict with a manuscript they are asked to handle.

Editorial independence

An editor who is an author of a submission to JETS takes no part in its handling. The manuscript is assigned to another editor and reviewed in the same manner as any other submission.

Conflicts of Interest ↗
04
Review Process

Peer Review

Every research article submitted to JETS is first screened by the editors for scope, originality, and basic quality.

Manuscripts that pass screening are sent to at least two independent external reviewers from different countries under a double-blind review process.

The editor makes the final decision, taking reviewers' reports into account. Reviewers provide advice but do not make the final publication decision.

Authors respond to reviewer comments point by point using the JETS response-to-reviewers template.

Peer Review Process ↗
05
Originality

Originality, Plagiarism and Redundant Publication

All submissions are checked for similarity with Turnitin before review.

Manuscripts above the journal's similarity threshold are returned without review. For manuscripts below the threshold, editors examine what overlaps, where it occurs, and why.

JETS treats the following as plagiarism or research misconduct:

  • Copying text, data, figures, or ideas without attribution.
  • Reusing one's own published text or results without citation (self-plagiarism).
  • Submitting the same work to more than one journal at the same time.
  • Splitting one study into several papers to increase publication count.

A manuscript based on a thesis, dissertation, preprint, or conference presentation may be considered, provided that this is disclosed in the cover letter and the article substantially extends the earlier version.

Plagiarism Policy ↗
06
Research Integrity

Data, Reproducibility and Research Ethics

Authors should describe methods, materials, software, and parameters in sufficient detail for others to repeat the work and should keep the underlying data available for a reasonable period after publication.

JETS encourages authors to deposit data and code in a recognised repository and to include a data availability statement in the article.

Research involving human participants, personal data, or animals

Such research must have been approved by an appropriate ethics committee, and informed consent must be obtained where required.

Authors should state the approval body and reference number in the Methods section. Fieldwork, industrial case studies, and data supplied by companies must respect confidentiality agreements and any permission needed for publication.

Data and Reproducibility policy ↗
07
Technology & Integrity

Use of Generative AI

AI tools cannot be listed as authors.

Generative AI tools cannot take responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, or originality of scholarly work.

Authors who use generative AI tools to prepare a manuscript must disclose how and where the tools were used and remain fully accountable for the accuracy and originality of the content.

Reviewers and editors must not upload manuscripts under review to generative AI services because doing so breaches confidentiality.

08
Research Misconduct

Allegations of Misconduct

JETS investigates any credible concern about possible misconduct in a submitted or published paper, whether it comes from a reviewer, reader, whistleblower, or anonymous source.

Concerns may include:

  • Fabrication or falsification of data.
  • Plagiarism.
  • Image manipulation.
  • Undisclosed conflicts of interest.
  • Citation manipulation.
  • Peer-review manipulation.

The editors first gather the facts and give the authors an opportunity to respond. Where needed, the journal contacts the authors' institution and asks it to investigate.

Outcomes may range from no action to a correction, expression of concern, rejection, or retraction. Whistleblowers' identities are protected as far as possible.

Allegations of Misconduct policy ↗
09
Post-Publication

Corrections, Retractions and Post-Publication Discussion

The published record should be accurate. Depending on the nature of the problem, JETS may issue one of the following:

Correction

An erratum or corrigendum is issued when an error affects part of the article but not its main conclusions.

Expression of Concern

Issued when an investigation is under way or its results are inconclusive.

Retraction

Used when findings are unreliable, the work is plagiarised or duplicated, or publication breached ethical requirements.

Retracted articles remain online and are clearly marked as retracted.

Readers wishing to discuss or challenge a published article may write to the editors. Substantive comments may be published as a letter to the editor, with the original authors invited to reply.

Post-publication Discussions and Corrections policy ↗
10
Accountability

Complaints and Appeals

Authors may appeal an editorial decision once by writing to the editorial office with a clear explanation of why they believe the decision was mistaken.

Appeals are assessed by an editor who was not involved in the original decision and may involve an additional reviewer. The decision on an appeal is final.

Complaints

Complaints about the conduct of the journal, editors, reviewers, or staff are handled by the Editor-in-Chief. Complaints concerning the Editor-in-Chief are handled by the publisher.

JETS aims to acknowledge complaints within 7 working days.

Access & Licensing

Open Access, Copyright and Licensing

All JETS articles are freely available to read, download, and share immediately upon publication, with no subscription or registration required.

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)

Articles are published under the CC BY 4.0 licence, which sets out how others may reuse the work. Authors retain copyright.

Copyright & Licensing ↗
12
Financial Transparency

Fees and Editorial Independence

JETS charges an Article Processing Charge (APC) only after a manuscript has been accepted.

Editorial decisions are independent of payment.

Payment, or the ability to pay, has no influence on editorial decisions. Editors are not informed of authors' payment status while a manuscript is under review.

Article Processing Charge ↗
13
Preservation

Archiving and Long-Term Access

Every article receives a Crossref DOI so that it can be cited and located permanently.

Published content is preserved through a server managed by ITB so that articles remain available even if the journal website changes or ceases operation.

Back issues from 2003 onward, including those published under the journal's earlier titles, remain accessible online.

Archiving and Preservation Policy ↗
14
Transparency

Journal Management and Transparency

JETS publishes the names and affiliations of its full editorial board, contact details, fees, and publication policies on its website.

Submissions are handled through Open Journal Systems (OJS) over a secure HTTPS connection.

These policies are reviewed regularly by the editorial board and updated when COPE guidance or journal practice changes.
